Mixtape Connection 10th Anniversary Party

Mixtape Connection 10th Anniversary flyer

Hey Mixtapers,

Well apparently it’s been a decade since I threw my first gig and club night. The Mixtape Connection was a monthly club night riding high on the indie dance rock vibe that was being driven by the likes of DFA Records and LCD Soundsystem. There were plenty of bands playing around Christchurch at the time but not many rock’n’roll DJs. Richard MacFarlane, Missy G, Bill (Indie Slut) and myself decided to change that and throw our own party at Capitol Bar. It ran every month for a year and a half and it was fun while it lasted. Since then we’re thrown on average a party a year. Missy G plays around Christchurch ALL THE TIME and Bill ran another club night called the Nu Trend with Daniel Millar (Tobiaz) and Annie Kean. The Mixtape Connection was a real launchpad for me and the rest of the crew, it helped us hone our DJing skills and get our names out there. Since then I’ve lived in Melbourne twice and played parties on both sides of the Tasman and at some big festivals.

We also put out a CD of Christchurch music..

This is NOT the Christchurch sound – Vol. 1 by Starlifter Radio on Mixcloud

I’d like to thank all the party peeps and everyone else who got involved with the parties over the years. For those still in town hopefully we’ll see you at Smashies! Also, many thanks to Brian Feary from Melted Ice Cream for the work on the gig flyer.

So come on down to Smash Palace on High Street to see the return of Christchurch’s most notorious scene elders for one night only of Rock, Brit-Pop, 80s, Electro-Clash, and whatever Missy G is gonna play, probably John B ;D

Mixtape Connection Vol. 4

Mixtape Connection Vol. 4 - Party Flyer

I was just going through all my old CDs and compilations I’ve put together over the years and came across this little bad boy, Mixtape Connection Vol. 4. This has recently been added to the StarlifterRadio.com playlist and is yours for the listening. This was a rad little mix I did for one of our Mixtape Connection club nights that we were hosting down at Capitol Bar back in 2005. Our special guest that night was Nick Harte aka Shocking Pinks (DFA Records). Now the tunes are great, my listing of the tracks somewhere useful — not so. So I don’t have any tracklisting for it, soz. The mix also contains a sample of James Murphy being interviewed by Nick D on 95bFM in Auckland, NZ. Rad!

Here are some links about some of what was going on in our Mixtape Connection crew at the time, including a few photos šŸ™‚

This is NOT the sound of New Zealand Music Monthā€¦

This is NOT the Christchurch sound - Vol. 1
This is NOT the Christchurch sound - Vol. 1

Well it kind of is. I just thought Iā€™d be a little controversialĀ with my post heading. Itā€™s NZ Music Month here in NZ so I thought Iā€™d play some NZ music on Starlifter Radio. Actually thatā€™s not true either, the kiwi tunes Iā€™m playing on my little internet radio station are getting played because theyā€™re fucking great and Iā€™m really digginā€™ them at the mo.

To start off with Iā€™ve got the original ā€œThis is NOT the Christchurch soundā€ CD. It features songs on the Indie Rock to Electro spectrum from bands and artists such as Ed Muzik, Tom Cosm, Break Mission Kills, Charlie ASH, Pig Out, Get Set Play, The L.E.D.s, Tiger Tones, 5 1/2 Minutes, Electro Pussy Posse and more. We released it with RDU 98.5 FM in June 2007 to get some attention for all the local acts we thought deserved a little more attention.

Then we have my latest DJ mix ā€˜Interstella Week Beats Your Intergalactic Yearā€, a set containing electronic beats and grooves from LCD Soundsystem, Daft Punk, DIM, Uberzone, The Future Sound of London, Vinyl Life & Joey Beltram, Rocha + Lewinger, Underworld and Telefon Te Aviv.

And further on the Christchurch tip weā€™ve got tracks from Bang! Bang! Eche!, Hypercolour, No Aloha; Auckland cats Bandicoot; and Ex-Dunners now AK kats (I think) Brains.

There is also the latest from School of Seven Bells, these guys are amazing!

So thatā€™s the go, thereā€™s heaps more on there as well so be sure to tune intoĀ www.StarlifterRadio.com and get down with your bad elf.

Loud Rock, Rickity Thieves, and Rock-Pop-Tones!

Shout Out Louds - Work

The latest to be added to Starlifter Radio is a raucous rock mix of new and not-so-new.

Just added:
Shout Out Louds – four by four
Thieves – comfort creature – Auckland, NZ – http://thievesss.bandcamp.com
Tiger Tones – i love you but i hate you (but i’m just not sure) – Christchurch, NZ – http://www.myspace.com/thetigertones
LCD Soundsystem – drunk girls
White Denim – shake shake shake
Dum Dum Girls – jail la la – http://www.subpop.com/cybersex
Golden Triangle – neon noose – http://www.subpop.com/cybersex

‘Four by Four’ is my favourite from the new album, ‘Work’, from Swedish Pop-rock group, ‘Shout Out Louds’. ‘Thieves’ from Dunedin is a band I’ve just stumbled upon, they’ve got a late 90s / early 2000s indie rock sound to them and definitely worth checking out. Christchurch outfit ‘Tiger Tones’ have just moved to Auckland and this is a classic dance floor number from them. The latest from the ‘LCD Soundsystem’ has just hit the blogo’ and ‘Drunk Girls’ is the first single, check it! I LOVE the buzz of ‘White Denim’ from Austin, Texas, ‘Shake Shake Shake’ is one of those tunes that gets my toe tapping and makes me what to dance, glorious! And finally there’s two from the latest Sub Pop Cybersex sampler, a free legal download and North-West indie pop-rock at it’s best.

There’s the goss! Check it out, tune into StarlifterRadio.com and Hit Play Zucker!!!

Peace,
Dr H
